Bassenthwaite is both a village and the only ‘lake’ in the Lake District that is officially called a lake (the rest are meres, waters and tarns). It is osprey country — the viewpoint at Dodd Wood is one of the best wildlife watches in Cumbria — with Skiddaw’s northern slopes above.
The village itself is quiet and agricultural; the draw is the water, the birds and the forest.
