Visitor guide
Thirlmere is a reservoir lake between Helvellyn and the central ridge, on the main Keswick–Grasmere road. Victorian dam-building drowned two villages; today it is a place of conifer shores, quiet laybys and the launch-pad for Helvellyn from the west.
Swimming is restricted; walking the shore and going up the fells is the point.
The steep west-side path; less famous than Striding Edge, still a big mountain.
Short, steep viewpoint over the whole reservoir.
